Conflict Leads To More Conflict

When Louis and Marie came into rule, the financial situation was already in shambles because of the past kings and the American War (Priamos p.5 pp.3).  The economy was dropping and everyone was unhappy.  Of course, Louis' and Marie's extravagant way of living only added to the debt and angered the common people.  The Estates General clamored for reforms that would diminish the royal power, but Marie would not back down (Reid pp.13). Jacque Necker, a financer of Louis, encouraged Louis to compromise with the Third Estate, but Marie encouraged him to do the opposite. He took Marie's advice to eject the Third Estate, angering the National Assembly and leading to the Tennis Court Oath and Storming of Bastille.  Marie's influence and obstinacy led to a rebellion (Priamos p.6 pp.1).
